About
About Ruth Weighill
Like many chefs, I come from a family where we all love food. Growing up, our family moved frequently due to my father’s job. When I was about 4 years old, we left 1970s England and the Winter of Discontent for a stint in Washington DC. I didn’t realise it at the time, but my interest in food was probably born in the USA. My parents’ excitement at the bounty 70’s America had to offer and the new foods and flavours we were exposed to – clams! lobster! pizza! southern fried chicken! Chinese food! MacDonald’s! – certainly rubbed off on me. This stuff simply didn’t exist in the UK at the time and seemed impossibly exotic – and delicious.
Moving so often meant that mealtimes, rather than place became the focus of our family life. My mum was a wonderful and generous cook and one of my most treasured possessions is her old pie funnel. No matter where we lived, this little blackbird poking its head out of one of mum’s delicious pies, symbolised that for us, food was the heart of home.
My Leith’s training provided me with a fantastic springboard, and soon Forkful Food was born. It has since grown from strength to strength, largely thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations. And now, the next chapter in my food life is starting with the launch of our cookery lessons and I couldn’t be more excited!
